Have a natural stone countertop-related question? We have the answer. Check out these FAQs and give us a call today for more information!

  • What is the difference between marble and granite?

Although both are stones and are quarried from the earth, granite and marble are very different from each other.

Granite is formed deep in the Earth’s mantle at extremely high temperatures. It is a very hard and resistant stone made of crystallized minerals.

Limestone, travertine, marble, and onyx are a part of the marble family and start out as sediment. Marble can stain more easily than granite. Marble is used more in fireplaces and bathroom vanities.

Granite is mostly used for kitchen countertops. If you're interested in getting granite countertops for your home, then get in touch with our team at House of Stone, Inc today!

  • Do all granite countertops need to be sealed?

Yes. All natural stones should be sealed. Although it is the hardest stone known to man, its porosity varies from quarry to quarry and from slab to slab. To learn more about your granite countertops, give us a call today!

  • Can knives scratch granite?

Knives cannot scratch true granite. The only thing harder than granite is diamond. Diamond blades are the only thing that can cleanly cut through granite. Quartz will also scratch granite. If you're a chef looking for a great countertop material, then make sure you hire our team to install granite countertops.

  • How easy is it to care for granite countertops? How do I clean off spills?

Very easy! Just wipe your granite countertops with a mixture of mild soap and water. If it's stained, contact your fabricator. Don't use any chemicals to clean the spill.

  • What is the process for a standard countertop installation?

When you get in touch with our team for installation, we will come to your house for a rough measurement of the countertops for estimating purposes. However, we recommend that you take them yourself since numbers do not need to be perfect. Make sure you provide drawings with measurements of all sides of the countertops, including along the walls and all finished edges. Please include your last name, contact information, and your zip code when you send us this information. Include any other details about color, edge profile, sink, and other cutouts. Any information not included will be assumed standard as follows:

    - Standard edge profile (An edge profile sheet can be provided via fax or email.)

    - One symmetrical double bowl undermount sink with up to three faucet holes

    - Standard 4" backsplash or standard color choice is New Venetian Gold, which is a low-mid range price.

House of Stone, Inc does not tear out old countertops. Check with your contractor for details. We will provide an estimate.

During the measuring process, old countertops do not have to be removed. A field technician will check your cabinets for level and proper support. He will make any recommendations. We do not provide or install additional supports or sub-tops. If new cabinets are being installed, then it must be done prior to the time of measure. Make sure you're ready with all the information for your sink and faucets. Some brands offer a template that you can print online when ordering. If this is not available, then the sink must be present. If your sink is cast iron, soapstone, or apron front it must be installed for the measurement. Have the model number ready for a cooktop and downdraft as well.

We will call to schedule the installation at least three days in advance. The remainder of your balance will be due before installation if the final payment has not already been made. Schedule your plumber to hook up your plumbing the next day. Do not try to schedule them for the same day since it is impossible to tell how long installation might take. If you have a large undermount sink, then we may need to put it into the cabinets from above before the countertops go on. Clear a pathway from the door to the cabinets. Remove all of the drawers and anything that may be in the lower cabinets. Remove any furniture or cover anything that can't be removed. Protect floors with a non-slip covering. All recommended countertop supports must be installed prior to installation.

Get in touch with our team today if you're interested in getting new quartz countertops.
